Principal - Surbec

Professor and Sun Oil Company Chair,
Charles L. Blackburn Presidential Professor,
Civil Engineering and Environmental Science
University of Oklahoma

  • Surbec Principal and Professor of Civil Engineering and Environmental Science at the University of Oklahoma
  • Supervises a laboratory at which surfactant-enhanced remediation processes are the main topic of research
  • Pioneered the area of surfactant-contaminant separation and surfactant reuse
  • Expertise in the areas of contaminant transport and fate in the environment, surfactant-enhanced remediation processes, surfactant systems for solvent replacement and advanced consumer products, design of unit processes for water quality management
  • Co-authored four books on these subjects, as well as sixty-five refereed journal articles and over 200 conference presentations/seminars
  • Co-investigator on over $8.0 million in external research at OU with funding sources including DOD, DOE, NSF, EPA, OCAST and industry
  • Associate Editor for: Groundwater, Journal of Contaminant Hydrology and Journal of Surfactants and Detergents
  • Invited Member: National Academy panel to evaluate Source Zone Removal Technologies
  • Specific sites at which his expertise was applied includes US Coast Guard, Elizabeth City, NC, US Coast Guard facility, Traverse City, MI, Hill Air Force Base, UT, Tinker Air Force Base, OK, and UST site in Shawnee, OK, Dover Air Force Base, Delaware, Alameda Naval Air Station, CA, Spartan Chemical Site, MI, etc.
  • Activities at these sites include site characterization and field testing of innovative remediation technologies. Target chemicals at these sites include heavy metals, chlorinated solvents, and petroleum hydrocarbons
  • Associate Director of the Institute for Applied Surfactant Research.
  • Co-teaches highly successful "Shortcourse in Applied Surfactant Science and
    Technology" to industry
  • Served as consultant to the EPA, DOE, and industry relative to ongoing activities and future directions of ground water characterization and remediation
